A gold capped Longines automatic with so many nice design touches to keep it interesting – not least the dial. Model reference 6405-1.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1960.
CONDITION
Mid century Longines watches are higher quality than their current prices suggest. Today they are deliberately pitched below their stablemate Omega, but back then Longines were competing with Omega but also some higher brands, and it shows. The details on this particular one are very, very nice. The hour markers have deep facets, and the quarters are marked with four pyramids. The case was made for Longines by Huguenin Frères, the company that went on to build cases for early Speedmasters and Certina DS models among many others. You can see the HF logo on the inside of the case back. The dial is original, with some patina, but has deep vertical stripes on the centre and concentric rings around the outside. The bezel has raised hour markers, but again there are slight differences on the quarters and at twelve. Behind the screw down case back you will find the seventeen jewel Longines calibre 19AS, and again the tiny details count – some of those jewels are set into chantons, something rarely seen in modern watchmaking (certainly under £10,000) but they are designed to ensure the jewels are working absolutely optimally. The bracelet is a period correct one from Kreisler, quite long and is has 10K gold filled tops on top of stainless steel. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The bracelet could be swapped for a leather strap if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.

This watch has been checked against the Watch Register and has not been reported as lost, stolen or implicated in fraud, and a copy of that certificate will also be included.
