Not a model we know much about, but we bought this Wittnauer Big Hand because it looks fantastic!
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We have struggled to find out much on this watch, so we are very loosely dating it to the mid fifties based on the styling alone. If you know more, or have any other evidence, please do contact us.
CONDITION
Wittnauer were better known in the US as Longines-Wittnauer, as they were the importer of Longines, Jaeger LeCoultre and Vacheron Constantin. The stand alone Wittnauer watches were marketed as a cheaper brand to those three, but cheaper was dirt cheap – they still used Swiss movements, and were nicely finished. This one stands out with the case design, particularly the devil horn lugs, and of course the big hour hand. Inside is a seventeen jewel Wittnauer 11NG movement, with KIF shovck protection on the balance, which is running well. The case – unusually including the case back – is 10k gold plated and standing up well to the seven decades of use. The dial has some spotting, and the hands have some rust showing through too. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
