A proper tool watch, this Seiko Diver has the orange dial that is supposed to be easier to read underwater. Model reference 6458-600A.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in September 1981. The watch appeared in the 1982 Seiko range, at a cost of ¥35,000.
CONDITION
It is unusual that a watch is more fashionable now than when it was available for sale in back in 1981. Back then most people wanted rectangular, thin, gold plated watches, not orange dialed dive watches. That is unless you were using the watch as a tool watch – which it was designed for – possibly as a professional diver. Many examples do show they have had a hard life, but this one doesn’t The glass and bezel insert have a few small marks, but nothing dramatic. The case isn’t as large as some diver watches, but it still boasted 150m water resistance and things like a unidirectional bezel and a screw down crown. The quartz movement has an end of life indicator, so the watch wouldn’t suddenly stop working when you were diving – we have to remember the watch was a vital piece of divers equipment, and you entrusted your life to it. The movement cover, often lost, is still in place. The hands may have been replaced, as they glow brighter than the dial. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The quick set date is working perfectly, and the day can be quick set too, choosing between English and Kanji. The rubber strap is new, and from Seiko – code GL46A19. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, buckle and strap.
