The Seiko ‘Kakume’ (Japanese for square eyes) is a model much sought after by collectors. Model reference 6138-0030.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in February 1976. Back in 1976 these cost ¥23,000, which was a bit of a bargain – the Quartz VFA was ¥150,000 in the same year! Now the VFA is much cheaper.
CONDITION
The Kakume is sometimes called the Big Blue, as it is a large watch (and obviously blue!). But we will stick with Kakume. They are now sought after and this one is in very original condition. This is the international version, with dial reference 0050T, so you should have the arrow hands, black surround for the day date (in English and French). The bezel should have the word TACHYMETER in silver, and the bracelet should be the fishbone style with Z039 end links. The case back should also be the plainer version you see here, and the pushers should have a taper on them, so altogether this watch passes every test. The 21 jewel 6138B movement is working well and unlike the Pogue’s 6139 this can be hand wound. Every part of the case, glass, bezel and bracelet does have marks – this is a large and thick watch to wear, so they do get some punishment – but this is priced accordingly. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath.
