The Seiko 5 Actus was designed to be less conservative than the normal 5 ranges of the late 60’s and early 1970’s. Model reference 6106-8680.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in August 1974.
CONDITION
There is little wrong with the Seiko 5 range, which was first brought out in 1963. But in an attempt to woo younger buyers, the Actus models focused a little closer on styling. So the normal silver dials were ditched for something a little more interesting, and this example has a brown dial that often looks black. Mechanically the only change from the standard watch is the day wheel was only available in Kanji and English, indicating the Actus wasn’t widely exported. You can quick set both day and date via the crown – a deep push changes both, and a shallow push changes just the date. The movement is Calibre 6106A, which has 23 jewels and is wound automatically only via the Seiko ‘magic fingers’ mechanism, which also hacks. The bracelet has been shortened in the past and has a sprung bracelet extender already fitted. The bracelet is the original, fitted with the signed Actus clasp, and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The clasp does have a dent but it has not affected the functionality.
