There have been many De Ville models from Omega over the years, but we haven’t had a Classic 97 before. Model reference 396.2532
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Unsurprisingly the Classic 97 range was launched in 1997. From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1998. You can see a very similar model on Omega’s website here.
CONDITION
The reason we haven’t seen a Classic 97 maybe because by the end of the nineties customers were moving away from slim dress watches, and divers and chronographs became the watches to have. Out of fashion went bi metal and gold too, with customers preferring stainless steel. So this was a nice watch but launched at the wrong time, hence sales were not as hoped. But fashion is temporary, and quality remains. The bezel is 18k gold, and while we can not be 100% certain we do beleive the links in the bracelet are 18k gold too – they are hollow, there is no signs of plate wear and the colour continues on the inside of the bracelet – a high wear area that would never normally be plated. The dial is very crisp, with patterning the to centre that is also repeated around the outside. The hands are perfect too. The glass does have a scratch on it but it is not deep. The movement, an in house 1532 calibre is more usually found in the Constellation range, and it is working perfectly.
