An early model, with the 70M waterproof dial, this Speedtimer was one of the earliest automatic chronographs. Model reference 6319-8000.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in February 1970. Most 1970 watches from Seiko will have the Water Resistant stamp on the case back rather than Water Proof – nothing technically changed, just the lawyers made it more ambiguous!
CONDITION
The 6139A movement from Seiko was one of the first automatic chronograph watches available, along with the Heuer/Breitling calibre 11 and Zenith’s El Primero that were all launched in 1969. The seiko movement is automatic wind only, which is why the crown is flush to the case, and has day and date calendar that can both be quick set. A shallow push on the crown adjusts the date, and a deeper press changes both day and date. You can also select between English and Kanji for the day language, which is handy if you are either bilingual or just like having a cool Japanese reading on your watch! European watches were often English and French, and USA market watches were often English and Spanish, but Japanese watch collectors often prefer the Kanji option. The dial is nice, with the silver minute counter for the chronograph being a nice stylish touch, but the chronograph hands, 1/5th second markers and the Speedtimer wording all being in orange is very 1970. The chronograph seconds hand resets to a smidgen before 60, as shown in the video. The bracelet is not by Seiko but by Bambi, and has had a Seiko 5 clasp fitted to it. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and clasp.
