With a double signed dial by Eterna and Garrard, and an inscription from Ford, you have three great names in one watch story.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the hallmark on the inside of the case back shows this case was assayed in London in 1963. But the more obvious dating reference is the inscription from Ford on the outside of the case back. It wasn’t unusual for massive companies like Ford, ICI and others to buy large batches of gold watches ready to give to loyal employees, and they would sit in safes until the correct time had passed – in this case 30 years.
CONDITION
Here we have a good watch brand, a great retailer and even a strong connection to Ford motor company, so this is a great combination. Garrard are the Crown Jewellers, but in essence they had Eterna make the case, movement and dial to their or Ford’s specifications. You get the Eterna manual wind calibre 1475K movement, set into a 9k gold case and the dial is double signed with both Eterna and Garrard names. The case back is screw down – always a nice thing to spot on a gold case as it takes more gold to do that, so you know not every penny was being counted when this was commissioned – and after 30 years work nor should Ford have cut costs! The watch has been worn, hopefully by Mr DuBock, and as the case has not been polished you will see marks. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
