A nice ‘pink on pink’ Gruen tank style watch, ideal for those on a budget. Model reference 401-420.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement design used in this watch was first produced in 1937, so the watch can not be older than this. When using the 420 style number in the online Gruen calculator it gives us a date of production of 1940, and the movement calibre number corresponds too.
CONDITION
Pink on pink is a term used for watches with pink gold dials and cases, but Gruen cheats here a little as the pink gold case is only gold filled – hence this is far cheaper than many pink on pink watches you will see. The case size is small, which is what they were in 1940, so please compare the wrist photos to help guide you to if this watch is the right size for your wrist. This watch has a Swiss movement, but as it was assembled and timed in the USA originally it also avoids any US tariffs that are currently in place if the watch did return to the USA. The manual wind calibre 401 movement is running well and is wound via the original signed crown. The downside is the glass crystal has several scratches and we have not been able to source a replacement. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
