This Superior was the undisputed top of the range Seiko watch in 1978, a lot higher than a Grand Quartz. Model reference 9983-8000.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in July 1978.
CONDITION
¥230,000 was a lot of money in 1978. For comparison, a similar Twin Quartz Grand Quartz in steel was ¥100,000, and an automatic chronograph with day and date was ¥23,000 – ten times less! The reason was that the Superior was Seiko’s technological tour de force, with incredible accuracy. A Superior watch was set to be within +/- 5 seconds per year, and nothing that accurate was available until radio controlled watches arrived decades later. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The bracelet is full length and can be adjusted without the need for special tools. The dial is crisp and the applied markers are not just on the hours but also on every minute marker. The day and date can both be quick set via the crown, which is original and features the twin crystal logo that also is on the dial. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
This watch has been checked against the Watch Register and has not been reported as lost, stolen or implicated in fraud, and a copy of that certificate will also be included.
