HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
It is difficult to pin this down, but the same style watch was later re-designated into the 1974 range, albeit with a gold plated case. We think this is an earlier watch from around the time of the Dreyfuss & Co launch, but if you know more then please do contact us.
CONDITION
Rotary was launched in 1895 by the Dreyfuss family. It used to be that they were all made in Switzerland, but as prices tumbled as the quartz crisis hit they began outsourcing the production, so now nearly all Rotary watches are not made in Switzerland but in the far east. But circa 2005 they launched the Dreyfuss & Co. line of hand made, Swiss watches that were a cut above the standard Rotary watches. So instead of gold plate, we get solid gold and a high grade 18k gold at that. The movement is a Swiss quartz, with ten jewels, which again is a higher than usual standard. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. And in looks this 1890 series watch is clearly designed to resemble the Cartier Tank. So what is the catch? Well the Cartier, which you would need £5k for in 18k, will have a solid case where are this is pressed from sheet gold, so the lugs for example are hollow – you can see dents on the bottom right lug to show this. On the Cartier the finish is better, unquestionably – not that the Dreyfuss is bad, but it reflects the enormous difference in price. So for example the Cartier would have heat treated blue hands, whereas the Dreyfuss has anodised blue hands. These details are not important to many buyers, but there will be some that will pay an additional £4,000 for them. The leather strap is the original, and retains the original deployant clasp (which is gold plated).
