HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
There is no serial number database that we know of for Oris watches, but we do know of a 1994 watch they produced for their 90th anniversary in 18k gold. That had the same design of case, similar dial, and the same hands as this watch so it makes sense they were produced at similar times. The first ever Oris automatic pointer date was in 1989, and the movements switched to red rotors circa 2003 which is consistent with our assumptions too.
CONDITION
A pointer date is a classic look that Oris revived in 1984, not long after the management buyout at Oris. They made the brave move not to compete with the the cheaper quartz watches, and to make every watch mechanical at a time when the industry was embracing quartz. It gave Oris a unique position in shopfronts and turned the company around. The movement in this watch is branded Oris 574, but it is heavily based on the ETA 2688 and that is no bad thing. That automatic movement with quickset date was around for nearly two decades, so is well proven and parts readily available if required. The dial has multiple fine patterns on it, and is clean although the lume in the hands has some discolouration. The gold plated case isn’t showing wear, even at the lugs tips, but there are light marks as you would expect from a watch that has been worn. The case is well put together – the case back is milled rather than pressed, and notice how the dial is secured to the case with four screws rather than a plastic spacer you might find elsewhere. The glass is unmarked. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
