A rarely seen divers watch from Oris, with the automatic movement and sapphire crystal.  Model reference 7041.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

Working forward, Oris were founded in 1904.  The movement found in this watch wasn’t available until 1982, and the logo on the case back is a variant that stated to be used in 1985.   In 1990 Oris started to use the term HIGH MECH on the watches and fitted red rotors to the automatic movement, to stand out from the quartz watches that were dominant.  This watch doesn’t have the red rotor, nor the words HIGH MECH, so we presume the watch was made sometime between 1985 and 1990 – we have picked a mid pick year.  We also have a 1991 article on Oris and the reference numbers for those models are 73xx and 74xx, so presumably 7041 preceded those.

CONDITION

Oris bucked the trend in 1982 when a management buy out set out that they would stop making quartz watches and focus on mechanical watches going forward.  In 1982 this was quite radical, and some brand like Zenith were actually going in the opposite direction and using only quartz movements, famously nearly scrapping the machinery to make the El Primero chronograph (it was hidden by a watchmaker!).  So naturally this watch has an automatic movement, the 25 jewel ETA 2824-2, with the oscillating weight signed for Oris.  This also has a quick set date, accessing via the screw down crown to aid water resistance.  The case has a unidirectional divers bezel, as well as sapphire crystal which wasn’t common at the time.  The dial and hands have some dirt in the lume, but it is not bad.  The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred.  The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and buckle.

This watch will be supplied with our branded reusable presentation travel case and our Certificate of Authenticity.
