This Waltham Maxim has the original strap still fitted, and is in wonderful original condition with a quality manual movement.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Waltham were founded in 1850, and registered the word Maxim in 1896, so that isn’t helpful. The movement used in this watch was first available in 1971, and by 1981 the Waltham brand was sold from a Swiss company to a Japanese company. As this watch has a Swiss movement, we have picked a mid point year between 1971 and 1981.
CONDITION
This Maxim watch is in wonderful, original condition. The case back sticker is still in place, and only the strap and gold plated buckle show signs of wear. The good news doesn’t stop there either. Inside the gold plated case you find the Peseux 7001 hand winding movement. This thin, 17 jewel hand calibre is still in production – in 1985 the design was bought by ETA and the ETA 7001 is used in a variety of watches, including as an ebauche (base movement) for brands like Omega, Nomos and Blancpain. The dial is excellent, changing between gold and brown depending on the available light. The hobnail decoration on the bezel is a lovely extra touch too. The leather strap is the original, with wear, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred – if the watch is to be worn and not kept in a museum we would recommend having a black leather strap fitted by us for free. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, buckle and strap.
