This stainless steel Big Q Timex Quartz watch was ahead of its time, and has lots of original features like the faceted crystal.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Unusually we have had the same model of watch before, albeit not on the same bracelet. That had the box and papers for 1976, and the details for that one can be seen here.
CONDITION
We have to remember that in 1976 quartz watches were still fairly new technology, and had only been around for 7 years. They were also highly desirable, and when Timex launched an affordable Quartz it was big news – we can see that from the advert plastered across the front of the BHI newsletter. When we say affordable the receipt for the last one we had showed it was £32 – but you could buy a manual wind Smiths Astral day date for £10.95 at the time. £32 when adjusted for inflation is £232 in today’s money. Unusually for quartz watches this watch has a sweep second, because it is a quartz controlled balance wheel. Our friends at Electric Watches have done a write up on these calibre 63 movements here. You also have a quick set date. One unusual feature is the faceted crystal – it is acrylic and the facets are on the inside, making it easier to polish. This example also has a signed Timex bracelet which is a good length and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. We will fit a new battery and battery case seal before sending this out to the next lucky owner.
