HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
These are both later than the serial number record for Universal Geneve exists from, but the movement fitted was not available until 1975 so they have to be after this year. The watch with the brown strap has an earlier serial number than the watch with the black strap, but we think they were both made in 1975 or shortly after.
CONDITION
Both watches we can offer today have the same model reference, case and movement, but one has a Roman numeral dial and one has stick indices. The case is very reminiscent of the earlier Gilt Shadow series, the ones designed by Gerald Genta with the micro rotor automatic movement. But these manual wind ones are much cheaper than the Gilt Shadow series. We have fitted them with brown and black leather straps to just show the different look a new strap can make. Inside each watch lies calibre 1-42, a seventeen jewel hand wound movement that is unique to Universal Geneve. Neither watch has a signed crown, so possibly it was never fitted when new. This one with the stick indices it a little thicker than the roman numeral watch, so is likely had a crystal replacement fitted as this is where the difference lies. The 20 micron gold plated case has a few marks, and dinks, but looks a richer gold than the roman numeral watch – that is only really noticeable when they are side by side though, as they are in the video. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
