Presumably called the Silver Line because they used solid sterling silver cases, this Certina is a range we haven’t seen before.  Model reference 4241 014.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

You can normally use the serial number on the case back  to date a Certina, but they stopped engraving thes ein 1974.  This watch has no serial number, so must be later than 1975.  Looking elsewhere, the movement used is based on a calibre introduced in 1968, and rival companies like Omega were selling a lot of silver watches in the mid seventies with their Jeux d’Argent range – a response to the rapidily increasing gold prices of the 1970’s.  Taken this evidence together, we think this watch was made circa 1975.

CONDITION

Using silver is watchmaking is hardly new – a lot of pocket watches had silver cases.  But in the 1970’s gold quadrupled in price within a decade, and it hurt Swiss watchmakers.  So with Omega and even Cartier switching some production to silver cases, others would have had the same idea.  The larger than average tank case is 0.925 silver, and in good order.  The movement is a Certina 408, a seventeen jewel manual movement based on the Peseux 7040, which is all working as expected.  The electric blue dial is eyecatching, with white Roman numerals, and is in good condition.  The acrylic glass does have some scratches, which might be on the inside of the glass.  The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred.  The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
