A very unusual drivers watch in an eye catching yet comfortable and practical case from Titan.  Fitted with a good automatic movement.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

There is little references for this brand.  Four different companies have registered the trademark in Switzerland, with Sovil et Titus being the likely maker of this watch (they registered the name in 1948, and the later Indian brand started in 1988.  The other two Titan’s were in the 1920’s).  However the movement started production in 1971, and the styling is straight out of the early Seventies.  If you have any other information please do contact us and we would love to find out more.

CONDITION

Let’s start with the movement.  This uses a small automatic from ETA, the 2671.  This 21 jewel, 28,800bph movement is working perfectly and also has a quick set date.  This movement was also used by Zenith, Eterna, Mido and Longines, so we are safe to say it is good quality.  This is important, as many watches with unusual cases are made as novelties with cheap pin pallet movements.  Not this one, or this Pierre Cardin with a Jaeger movement from the same period.

The watch case is brushed on the top and chromed on the sides.  The top surface is very good, but there is a scratch to the case to the left of the crown at 6.  The whole design works well, with some of the best symmetry you will find on a watch design.  Another unusual quirk is the lug size.  The bottom hidden lug is 20mm, and the top lug 18mm.  We have fitted a new leather strap with a 20mm width, notched at the top to fit the different lug width.  The case curves around the wrist and is very comfortable, and this means the dial is angled towards you.  This is ideal for drivers, hence the nickname for this style of watch.  Other drivers watches have the dial adjusted, so 12 is at the traditional 2 position to achieve a similar result, but that can be difficult to read when not driving.  We have included a few different wrist shots to show the advantages of the case design.
