HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement fitted to this watch was only made between 1973 and 1976, which is quite a narrow window.
CONDITION
When researching this you will find vintage roamer prices are all over the place. The more expensive watches will always be earlier, and probably the divers style watches. Then you have the cheap eBay specials, which a lot are what we call frankens – made from many parts, not all of which came from Switzerland. Why was this? Well in 1975 the Swiss watch industry was under great pressure to reduce prices to compete with cheaper Asian imports, and Roamer took the decision to stop making their own movements and bought in quite cheap movements to put in their watches. It was a significant drop in quality and made faking the later watches with the cheap movements easy. The best advice to avoid these is to stick with pre 1975 watches that have the in house MST movements. Not only are they more likely to be genuine, they are also just better watches.
So this Searock has a screw down case back, a dust cover inside protecting that in house movement. Calibre 520 is a seventeen jewel movement with hacking, to allow precise time setting. This is operated by pulling out the signed crown to stop the second hand. The case is gold plated and is in better than average condition. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
