A second generation Trans-Atlantic Sub Sea 50 manual wind watch, which shows just how good Movado watches used to be. Model reference 290-704-J511.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Movado changed the model reference numbers they used in 1966 and in 1971, when they joined Zenith. The reference number of this watch falls between 1966 and 1971, and the movement was retired from 1970, so we have picked a mid point year between 1966 and 1970.
CONDITION
Ask any designer and they will say to do something simple is hard. Too plain and it becomes boring, and avoiding that is the key. They should be happy with their work on the Sub Sea 50 Trans-Atlantic. The case has blended, half bombe lugs that work well. The stick indices on the dial have bevels to bounce light off, and black (onyx?) inserts that the mark one Sub Sea 50 didn’t have. And while the name is long the text on the dial is discrete. Inside you get the Movado calibre 290 movement, a 17 jewel manual wind item that was based on an ETA ebauche. Condition is very nice, and it is a treat to wind. The name Trans-Atlantic refers back to 1956, when a Movado waterproof watch was carried submerged in seawater on the French liner ‘Ile -de-France’ to New York and back ad was still working perfectly. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
