This circa 1962 MuDu Doublematic, with the 30 jewel Felsa 4000 movement, has a pleasing and almost hidden pattern on the dial.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We know that this company were formed in 1955, and they registered the trademark Doublematic in 1962. This, combined with a second opinion from a serious collector of MuDu watches (He has nearly 700!) and the production dates of the movement lead us to estimate this watch was made circa 1962.
CONDITION
The 10 micron gold plate case does have some wear on the lug tips, but no real damage and wears bigger than the dimensions suggest – possibly because of the thick lugs and deep case. The 30 jewel, top of the range version of the Felsa 4000 was one of the first automatic watches to be able to wind in both directions – hence Doublematic. The dial has a fine two tone effect, where the applied numbers and hour markers are set within circular grooves. Just to make it more complex the 12, 3, 6 and 9 markers have the grooves going in the opposing direction, which means that the light is continually bouncing in different directions on the dial and the effect is very appealing. We are not sure if the hands have had the lume painted at some point. We have fitted a new acrylic crystal and quality leather strap, so it is ready to wear.
