With a gold filled square monobloc case, this Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic is different to most. Model reference 2788.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
With very little to go on, this is difficult to date. The term Gyromatic was trademarked by Girard-Perregaux in 1950, and by 1965 they were pioneering the high beat, 36,600 movements with 39 jewels. Our movement has shock protection that the earlier ones do not, so we think it fits somewhere around 1960.
CONDITION
A monobloc case is made from a single piece of metal, and the advantage is that if you don’t have a join where the case back meets the case then the watch can’t leak there. To access the movement you have to remove the glass and take the movement out from the front. And the advantage of a rolled gold case is that the gold layer is far, far thicker than just gold plate – this extra thickness is especially useful on square watch cases, as corners tend to wear through more so on gold plated watches. The dial is clean and all original – the creamy tritium lume plots matching the hands perfectly as a tell tale sign of it not being restored. The movement is signed Girard-Perregaux 152-305, and has seventeen jewels and quick set date. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
