1055 on this Laco dial is a reference to the calibre fitted inside, so they must have been quite pleased with it.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Laco were formed in 1925, but as this watch has the words FOREIGN on the dial rather than Made in Germany we know it is post WW2. From the production dates of the movement we estimate this was made circa 1955.
CONDITION
Black dials on watches of this era are far rarer than you might expect – that is original black dials. The dial restorers often use black paint, as it covers easier than pale colours. This is an original dial though – there is no paint on the sides of the rather attractive sharks tooth applied hour markers, and the dial is evenly covered with patina. The movement mentioned is the manual wind, 17 jewel Durowe 1055, which is working okay. It doesn’t wind as nicely as say a Longines or Omega of this period, but it never did compete with watches in that price bracket either. The 20 micron gold plated case does show wear to the lugs, but this is more noticeable in photographs than on the wrist where it looks quite good. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
This watch will be supplied with the jewellers presentation box that arrived with the watch from N&A Lane, of Leicester and our Certificate of Authenticity. We can not say with certainty the jewellers box is the original from when the watch was supplied, but it looks the right period and the watch came in it so we will pass it on.
