An elegant square dress watch from Ebel, with manual wind movement and a suitably slim stainless steel case. Model reference 1534.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
A difficult watch to accurately date, the movement used in this watch was first launched in 1955, so the watch can not be older than that. Ebel’s history goes back to their founding in 1911. The ‘Kissing E’ logo was first used in 1950, and the word Ebel is actually a combination of the founding couples initials – Eugène Blum Et Lévy.
CONDITION
The vast majority of dress watches are round, but Ebel produced this square version for those who want something different. The stainless steel case is quite slim, and sits comfortably against the wrist. The serial number and model reference do look to have been stamped upside down on the case, which is a novelty. The dial is not perfect by any means, with patina around the edges, shwon in the photos and visible when the watch is cased up and on the wrist but the price reflects this. The movement is labeled an Ebel 97, which is based on the AS1575. Ebel doesn’t seemed to have redesigned anything on the 17 jewel manual wind movement, just finished some parts a little better. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
