With a triple calendar, this Movado was very impressive for the time – especially when cased in 18k yellow gold. Model reference 4820.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
At this period, Movado were not using sequential serial numbers so dating their watches is always challenging. However, the movement used in this watch was introduced in 1938 and phased out in 1956, so we have picked a mid point. We have found an advert from 1940 for a similar model, with slightly different lugs and hour markers.
CONDITION
Movado were the watch company that specialised in calendar watches before the feature became more commonly available. This watch contains the same movement as found in the Movado Calendograf ranges, the calibre 475. This has sub seconds and the pointer date, as well as day and month windows (in French). There is a pusher at two to advance the month, and another pusher at four to advance the date. To set the day you have to wind the hands forward to your desired day, then set the date and month if needed. Both day and date advance at midnight, but the month always needed to be advanced manually. All features are working correctly, as shown in the video. The dial on this watch is very good, almost suspiciously good and it may have had a dial repaint at some point – but we can not be sure. It is either an excellent repaint or a great original dial. Neither the hands nor the dial has any radium lume. The 18k gold case with the ribbed sides feels solid – these were also available in 9k and 14k grades, but 18k is the one to have if you can find one. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
