HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The Overseas model was launched in 1996. With Patek Philippe’s Nautilus and Audemar Piguet’s Royal Oak it meant the holy trinity of watchmakers all now had a steel sports watch with integrated bracelet. We sent the serial numbers on the case back and movement to the very helpful people at VC and they confirmed this watch was made in 1996.
CONDITION
Vacheron Constantin make fine Swiss watches from the very top tier. There has never been a watch that has left their workshops that wasn’t the best it could possibly be, and they have been doing this since 1755. So here you get what you would expect and hope for. The dial has fine guilloche pattern that is barely noticeable until up close, and is also unusual in being marked with the letter σ (sigma) either side of SWISS MADE at the bottom of the dial. Sigma dials are normally only found on watches from the 70’s and was a symbol that the materials used to make the dial, hands and markers were all precious metal (usually gold), so it is nice that VC seem to have reintroduced that for the Overseas. The dial is clean save for the tiniest spots. The watch has just been serviced by Vacheron Constantin themselves which included replacing the sapphire crystal and giving the case and bracelet the lightest possible polish – the condition now is superb. The automatic movement is chronometer rated, and the rotor is tipped in 21k yellow gold. The bracelet has one of the most secure clasp locks ever made, and it was specifically for the Overseas. The movement photo was taken before the service work was done.
