This is the full size transitional pre Bond quartz model, still on the original bracelet. Model reference 396.1051.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1991.
CONDITION
The ‘pre Bond’ watch was never called that while it was in production – the 1993 Seamaster that was worn by James Bond gave this watch it’s nickname in retrospect. This model was only in production between 1988 and 1994, and the earlier watches had six lobe crowns, single flip lock clasps and Mercedes style hands. The last watches had ribbed crowns, sword hands and double flip lock clasps. This watch has a mix of the two – sword hands, ribbed crown and earlier single flip lock clasp. The hands are almost certainly a later replacement, as they glow far more than the lume plots on the dial, but we can’t say if they were changed from Mercedes style or like for like – all we can report is what is in front of us. The movement is Omega’s six jewel 1538 quartz with quick set date which is all working well. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The bracelet, model 1455, has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath and is a good length, plus it has a wet suit extension fitted. The Omega logo on the clasp has worn or been machined polished. The three piece case is quite good, but the unidirectional bezel does show marks. The sapphire crystal is great, as is the dial.
