Model reference 16013 is often considered the Datejust to have, as it has the quick set date earlier ones lack, and the open six/nine calendar the later ones lost.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the bottom lugs we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1981.
CONDITION
The 3035 movement is working well, including the quick set date (which is unusual in design in that you put the crown into position 1, and turn it anti clockwise to change the date). The jubilee bracelet, stamped M1 and 62523 with 455 end links, is long and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. There is no significant damage on the unpolished case, and the 18k gold bezel is not badly worn anywhere either. The dial is particularly good, with the lines on the dial making for very pleasing effects in different lights. Included is the original inner and outer boxes, chronometer hangtag and the sales hangtag which has the same serial number as the watch.
The Datejust was launched in 1945, and was originally going to be called the Jubilee to celebrate Rolex’s 40th anniversary. Eventually Jubilee was chosen for the bracelet and Datejust for the watch, and two legends were born.
