The Seamaster Classic here doesn’t look like a ‘classic’ Seamaster that we might imagine today, but instead is more dressy. Model reference 196.0216.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can date this watch to being made circa 1981. The serial number range for this straddles 1980 and 1981, and this is over half of what the possibilities could be. Omega’s own website says this Classic model was launched in 1981, so on the balance of all probabilities this is a 1981 watch.
CONDITION
When we think of the Omega Seamaster we might automatically think of James Bond, and fairly large dive watches. But in 1948 when the Seamaster range was launched the watches were far closer to this design than the modern dive watches – probably why Omega named this the Classic. This watch has the Omega 1377 quartz movement, which has the ability to advance the hours without stopping the watch – ideal for frequent travellers or for spring and autumn time changes. The minute and second hand is adjusted via a pusher at 2, and all is working very well – it is running at +0.07 of a single second per day. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The dial does have some patina on, and the crystal has a few scratches too, but the plating on the case is all pretty good. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown and buckle.
