HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in August 1980. The first appearance of this model in the catalogues is for 1981, where it was ¥150,000. That was the same price as the most expensive Grand Quartz, which also uses a Twin Quartz movement. These sat just below the very expensive (¥ 235,000) Superior models as the best Seiko watch of the time. As a comparison, a lesser Seiko that looks similar might cost only ¥40,000.
CONDITION
Why would the Twin Quartz need two quartz crystals in your watch when normally one is enough? The first is for regular timekeeping, and the second allows the watch to adjust for temperatures (thermocompensate), meaning this watch will be more accurate than most all year round. The six jewel Seiko 9461A movement also has a trimmer, which is a way that high end quartz watches allow the watchmaker to adjust the timekeeping yet further. This watch has been tested and is running 0.21 seconds per day (so it would take five days to gain one second). To remove the case back it is not the usual screw down case back, but a bayonet fitting that only requires 30 degrees of movement. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. Overall condition is very good – the small spots of the dial are about as bad as it gets, and even the fine etching on the gold plated bezel still unmarked. The bracelet is quite long and can not be extended, and a jeweller may be required to make it shorter too as it is designed to be tailored to your wrist. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, crystal, buckle and strap.
