Model reference 1500 is an ideal combination of the cheaper Oyster Perpetual’s 34mm Oyster case and the chronometer rated movement also found in the more expensive Datejust.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the bottom lugs we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1970.
CONDITION
As with all watches, Rolex especially, it is important to make sure the watch is ‘right’. Reference 1500 should have a smooth bezel, open six and nines on the calendar and screw down signed Twinlock crown – this one does. By 1970 it should be powered by a COSC rated calibre 1575 – stamped on the bridge 1570, and the movement should not hack nor have quick set date. Again, this watch is correct. Originally the watch would have been on a metal bracelet, but over the years this watch has lost that and instead this one has a Rolex leather strap and buckle. There is a service mark inside the case for Rolex London, but we do not have any paperwork to back this up. But the watch is working very well and that would also explain the nearly new strap, which wouldn’t be supplied by anyone but Rolex themselves. And then there is the fabulous dial, which is original – replacement dials wouldn’t have faded tritium lume like this one does. Overall, this is an excellent example of a very good watch. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, buckle and strap.
