The very hard to find green dial version of the Zenith Respirator – sometimes mistakenly labelled the JFK watch.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1969.
CONDITION
Let’s first clear up the JFK confusion. The 35th President did have a few watches, including a square Zenith with date between 4 and 5, but the Respirator was launched in 1968, years after JFK was killed, so there is no possible connection between any Respirator and John F. Kennedy.
This watch is very scarce with the green dial, and very desirable because of the same mesmerising dial. In the video we explain how long we have been looking for one of these, and why. Not that this dial is perfect either – it does have some patina and it is slightly bent around the movement too, which is often found on the Respirator. That movement is Zenith’s 2562 automatic, with semi quick set date. It is running nicely. The original crown and buckle are both nice to have, and that buckle is fitted to a new lizard strap that we would have to replace with a leather strap if the watch was sold outside of the UK to comply with CITES regulations. The stainless steel case is good too. A silver or gold dialed Respirator is a much cheaper option if you just want a fine quality and good sized square watch, but the green is the one to have if you can.
