Rumanel may be a brand you are not familiar with, but the Super Compressor case for this Datostar makes this more special.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Inside the case back is a production stamp saying 1-69, so we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1969.
CONDITION
Rumanel were founded in 1959 in Biel, Switzerland, but they are not the biggest name in horology. Like the majority of companies they designed watches using other companies components. The super compressor case is a great example. Made by Ervin Piquerez S.A (EPSA), this is actually the super compressor 3 case, with screw on case back. The clever design means the seals are tightened under pressure, meaning the deeper you go the more water proof the watch would become (to a certain point anyway!). Inside is the ETA 2472, a 25 jewel automatic movement that is running nicely, and has semi quick set date too. Rumanel will have either made the dial or had it made for them, and the red, white and blue colours look good. The lume is a little dirty and the marker at 9 is missing a piece of lume. The internal bezel turns smoothly via the cross hatched crowns used in super compressor cases by most of the 40+ companies that used them – those brands include JLC, IWC, Zenith, Blancpain and Girard-Perregaux, so we are in good company albeit at a far lower price point. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
