A solid gold Swiss watch from Longines, complete with box and papers, is a great addition to any collection.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The serial number on the movement dates this watch to being made in 1967. But the original guarantee paperwork, which matches the movement serial number, states this watch was sold in March 1968. Either year can be considered valid for a birth year watch. The gold case was assayed in London in 1965, but because the movement was made later then they can not have been paired together before 1967.
CONDITION
Longines watches have always been prized for their quality, and the 1960’s is arguably their greatest period. The calibre 410 movement fitted to this watch is running sweetly, and the inside of the case back is marked for Baume, Longines importer during this period, and for DS&S – This latter mark is a London based case maker D Shackman & Sons, who made cases for Rolex, Omega, Longines and others during this period. The import duty on complete gold watches was very punitive, so often the movement would be imported and then fitted to an English made case to avoid this extra tax. The dial does have a few marks, which are far more visible on the enlarged photographs than in real life, but the case is in very good order.
This watch will be supplied with the original presentation box, papers and our Certificate of Authenticity.
