A highly sought after Super Kontiki diver watch with the 40mm case. Model reference 130PTX/2
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1966. This was the last year of this second generation model production, and having only begun in 1963 there are not many about.
CONDITION
This watch was designed as a direct competitor for serious dive watches, and at the time few people who didn’t dive bought a divers watch. The main competitors would have been the Omega Seamaster SM300 and the Rolex Submariner. The first KonTiki divers watch was launched in 1960, and celebrated Thor Heyerdahl and his crew sailing a balsa wood raft across the south Pacific (the raft was called Kon-Tiki). The earlier watches had a smaller case, but in 1963 that was updated to 40mm we have here. Post 1963 watches like this have the correct T SWISS T on the bottom of the dial, and this watch also starts to transition from Super Kontiki to Kontiki with Super written underneath, like in the Mk3 models launched late 1966. The hands are correct too – they are quite distinctive with one pencil hand for the hours and a sword hands for the minutes. The bezel turns both ways without clicks, and has some wear to the insert, but the insert is the rarest La plongee in feet variant so there was no way we would slip a shiny new bezel in and destroy the value. Even the crystal is the signed Eterna part. The strap is not original, but this watch does suit a wide variety of straps. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. Inside is Eterna’s in house 1424UD calibre, which is working well (including the pull to set quick set date). The gold medallion is still on place on the case back too, which are sometimes lost. You might a long time to find one as nice as this.
