A desirable, all stainless steel Seiko Champion Calendar 860 when most were chrome plated. Model reference 7622-8981.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in February 1965.
CONDITION
The Champion was first launch in 1962, and you could get gold plated brass versions or stainless steel in the early watches. The second generation, which this one falls into, were a little more rugged in design and were renamed the 850 and 860 models, and only on the 860 model did you have the option of having a stainless steel case rather than chromed brass. Being a solid and not plated version is the one everyone wants of course. This version has very cool hour markers too, whereas most have stick indices. The crown may be a later replacement, as it is not marked SW, but this is not unusual for a manual wind watch. The movement used is Seiko calibre 7622, which was a renamed 860 (where from the Champion 860 got its name), and it has 17 jewels and is all working well. The date can be semi quick set, by going past midnight, back to 20.00, and past midnight again. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
