This Bucherer Chronometer is from one of Switzerland’s best jewelers, and since 1888 have been held in the same family trust. Model reference H639.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the supplied paperwork we can see this watch was sold in September 1965. The numbers on the paperwork are not on the watch (the watch has no numbers except on the movement), so we think they are model numbers.
CONDITION
For many years Bucherer commissioned companies to make good watches bearing the stores name, and this is a nice example. The new Carl F. Bucherer watches have in house movements, and are finished in 18k gold mainly, so the nearest modern version of this watch is the Manero at £10,200, but that has an 18k gold case not the gold plated case you see here. This watch has 20 micron gold plating, and the mark WM as the case makers that we have not managed to identify. Unusually it is gold plated on the case back, and this also has a very nice logo and the number 1888 stamped in for the year the company was founded. Inside this monocoque case is an ETA 2451 automatic movement, which is all running well as you would expect from something designed to meet the high chronometer standards. The price then was 198 CHF, which translates to £329 in today’s money. Overall condition is very good, and the lightly used strap suits the watch so we kept it together – however if you want a different strap just let us know when you place your order.
