The Seiko Cronos (not Chronos) Special was an upper end, high quality watch that was the forerunner of the King Seiko ranges. Model reference 15033.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in May 1963.
CONDITION
The first Cronos models were Seiko’s first waterproof watches, launched in 1958 to rival the Citizen Parawater that beat Seiko to make Japan’s first waterproof watch. This slightly later version is more of adress watch, and the Special part of the watch relates to the dial – the mark above 6 leads us to believe the dial markers and the hands to be made from gold. But the movement is also pretty special. The calibre 810 has quadruple shock protection, and a high jewel count of 23. Jewels are there to help the longevity of any watch movement, so the more the better on older watches. The dial is very clean, the case is large for the time at 36mm, and so many of these were gold plated that the stainless steel ones are harder to find. The case does have a dink on one of the lugs. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
