Mr J. Conley had to work for 25 years to be awarded this J.W. Benson watch, yet now it is far easier to obtain.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the long service inscription on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being engraved for 1962. GKN are now involved in primarily aerospace, but at this point in their history steel was their main business.
CONDITION
J.W.Benson had their workshops destroyed during the Blitz. Although they continued to make watches after the war, they never made the same percentage of parts and instead relied on other companies to make the majority of the watch for them, and then they marketed them in the UK. In this example, we have a Nivada 35 21 jewel movement fitted for example. It is a good thing, with a nice feel to the winding and capped rather than open jewels to the main bridge, and it could be that Nivada made more of the watch or even the entire thing – we will never know as it is not stamped with makers marks anywhere else that we can see. Naturally coming form GKN as a gift the case is made from steel, and is has a screw down case back too. The crown does have a motif on it, but we can not identify what it is, and near the crown the case does have a ding. The dial is quite clean in both design and condition, and the lume used is not radium but likely tritium. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred.
