This men’s Avia vintage gold watch is running well and, although designed for a man, is a smaller size so could be considered Unisex.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Birmingham hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1958.
CONDITION
Inside the gold case is an AS 1158 15 jewel manual wind movement that is all running well. The case does have a few dings, but was never engraved. This was, and remains, an entry level gold watch. The size and weight was designed with the brief to keep the material costs down, with things like fixed bars and thin gauge metal, but it was made by Dennison and this Meteor design was used by several different manufacturers. The case was British Made, so Avia imported the movement from Switzerland and had it cased in the UK to sidestep the punitive import duty on gold watches. The dial has a nice lined finish, and the applied markers and hands are likely to be gold too (not hallmarked, but the common practice with gold watches was to use gold indices and hands)
