A very clean presentation men’s Eterna in a 9k gold case – either saved for best, or barely worn! Model reference 13322.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately know that the movement was made in 1955. However the Birmingham hall mark shows it was assayed in 1957. The two components would have been joined to make a watch very shortly after being assayed.
CONDITION
We won’t know who ACM was, or what he did at F.A. Bateman Ltd, but we can know part of his story – he worked there for over twenty years and was rewarded for his loyalty with a nice gold watch. This was quite a common way to reward employees, and seemed to all but die out in the 1970’s when gold became far more expensive (and employers tighter!). Some people do not like inscriptions, but others like the extra information they give us.
We can see that ACM was a careful man. The watch is in excellent condition. The leaf hands are straight and true, and the dial is as clean as you will find an original dial from the 1950’s. The case, made by Dennison, was made in England to avoid the punitive import tax of solid gold watches to Eterna ‘s specification – this was common practice. The case a few very small marks, but overall is very good. The manual wind movement, with sub seconds dial, is an Eterna calibre 520. This is a really nice movement, and highly finished – you wouldn’t find this finishing or quality anywhere near the price of this watch in a new watch. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
