HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Whilst we do not have the box or papers for this watch, we have found a similar model (with a red dial!) in the 2006 Wristwatch Annual book. The price back in 2006 was $8,100. For comparison, in 2006 a 36mm Rolex Datejust was $5,700, an Omega Speedmaster ‘First Space Walk’ chronograph was $3,195 and a 18k gold Cartier Tank Louis quartz was $5,550, so this was always a very exclusive watch made in smaller numbers than those mainstream brands. More comparable was a Franck Muller Casablanca at $7,000
CONDITION
Micheal Parmigiani, just like Franck Muller, was a watch restorer of serious note before founding his own company. By 2006 just 60 people worked here, designing movements and assembling the watches. And we are talking some serious horology too – chronographs, perpetual calendars and chiming tourbillons as well as a Bugatti collaberation with a unique look. But the Kalpa is a more reserved watch. Kalpa, the Sanskrit term for ‘The Biggest’ was available in two sizes – Grande and Grande XL, and the Grande is big enough for most wrists. It has Parmigiani’s calibre 331 inside, an automatic with twin barrels for a longer running time, and 32 jewels. Of course it is beautifully finished, and the gold rotor is visible via the exhibition case back. The leather strap is lightly worn but a Parmigiani original, as is the clasp. The dial is very clean, with guilloche patterning to the centre. The dial and hands have no lume applied, but the black paint in the minute hand is cracked if you look closely. The sapphire crystal is faultless. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, buckle and strap.
