The Franck Muller Casablanca is already a classic watch, instantly recognisable by the dial style and Cintree Curvex case to anyone who knows anything about watches. Model reference 5850.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We are currently talking to Franck Muller about confirming this, but we think this example comes from circa 2005. Once we hear more we will be able to update this. The Casablanca was launched with a smaller font for the name, and this one has the larger font of later watches.
CONDITION
The lume on this watch is outstanding, and when you see the care and attention that Franck Muller pay to their watch dials you gain an extra appreciation. We have been lucky enough to tour their premises, but if you want an insight without the flight then this video is excellent.
The Casablanca is still available new, and the price is currently £9,800 for a comparable specification. This example has the classic black dial, and blued hands – even the seconds hand has lume applied to it. The case is all stainless steel, and it does show small marks of wear. The crown is original, and the sapphire glass faultless. The strap will be replaced – it isn’t original, and the owner of BYW’s wants to wear this watch while we have it! The standard buckle has been replaced with a Franck Muller deployant that is usually only found on their more expensive watches. Inside you have an automatic movement that has been finely finished and upgraded. The oscillating weight is made of 22k platinum. The case size is the gent’s version, but the dimensions are not classic proportions – this case is designed to fit the wrist, so don’t think this case is going to feel the same as a 32mm round case – it feels much larger.
