The Kontiki has been the sportier, water resistant Eterna model to have since 1958. Model reference 1100.41.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We know from an article in the June / July 1991 International Wrist Watch magazine that the 1856 range was launched in that year, and the KonTiki would be the range topper appearing in 1992. Prices started at £475, and rose to over £5,000 for 18k gold versions.
CONDITION
In 1947 the Kon-Tiki raft sailed for 101 days with six crew, 4,300 miles across the Pacific ocean. Each crew member wore an Eterna watch – and all the watches survived the journey. In 1958 Eterna took what they had learnt from those watches and launched the KonTiki model line up (dropping the hyphen). This 1991 version has a sapphire crystal and screw down case back and crown to make it robust. Inside is fittingly an ETA movement (ETA was ETernA’s in house movement company for many years), which is all operating correctly. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The original case back sticker is still in place, showing when the battery was changed. The dial is particularly nice, with the white hands very legible against the black. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, and crown.
