A full sized TAG Heuer 2000 with grey dial is always nice to find. Model reference 972.006
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The 2000 range was launched by Heuer in 1982, and stayed around until 2005 in various guises. TAG bought Heuer to become TAG Heuer in 1984/5, so our watch must post date this. In 1992 the company revamped their model designation, so 972.006 became WE1112, and our watch has the earlier numbering system. And we have found a catalogue from 1991 that shows this exact model, and a catalogue from 1988/89 that also shows this model, so circa 1990 is as close as we can get.
CONDITION
The way that the bezel on this watch has faded with age divides people. Some people are happy to pay a premium for a ‘ghost’ bezel, happy in the knowledge it is original and the patina makes every watch different. Others might prefer a crisp new bezel insert, but we are in the first camp. The unidirectional bezel does turn smoothly. The dial has very nice triangular hour markers in tritium lume, but there is a slight stain towards the bottom of the dial. This mark is not due to any battery leakage – not only is the movement clean but the battery is on the opposite side of the movement to the stain. We will fit a new battery to the TAG Heuer branded ETA 955.112 movement before sending the watch to the new owner. This watch retains its original signed screw down crown and the original bracelet with dive suit extension – they were proper 200M rated divers watches. We have cleaned the bracelet in our ultrasonic bath. The glass has slight scratches but they are not bad. 2000 models are becoming rarer, and as one of the most desirable watches of their day they are very collectible and wearable in this specification.
