Just serviced, this automatic chronograph Gerald Genta Gefica Safari was another Genta creation to add to his very impressive career.  Model reference G2989 7.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

The Gefica Safari was unveiled in 1984 following a request from a trio of hunters (Geoffroy, Fissore, and Canali).  It was this the world’s first bronze wristwatch, a material chosen specifically because it does not reflect light and therefore would not attract unnecessary attention from the hunters).  The earliest models had elaborate calendars, while the automatic chronograph in either bronze or 18k gold was introduced at Basel 1987.  This watch can’t be older than this, but may be newer.

CONDITION

Gerald Genta was a watch designer, and without question he was THE watch designer of his generation.  His first work was the Universal Geneve Polerouter, and this was followed by work for Omega, IWC, Bulgari, Cartier and many more, but his most famous creations were the 1972 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the 1976 Patek Philippe Nautilus.  He also set up his eponymous brand, which is one we have here.  Some of the Gerald Genta watches with the incredibly complex movements cost fortunes – in 1995 a Gerald Genta Grande sonnerie tourbillion would cost about $900,000.  Happily the watch we have here is cheaper to buy and to service, having the venerable Valjoux 7750 movement inside.   The red dial is very good, as are the hands.  The bronze case has the dull patina of age the design called for.  The leather strap is nearly new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred.  The original, signed, bronze and steel folding clasp is included but we don’t have a strap to fit it.  The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and clasp.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.

This watch has been checked against the Watch Register and has not been reported as lost, stolen or implicated in fraud, and a copy of that certificate will also be included.
