HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We have had a very similar Longines watch before, which had the box and papers, which was sold in 1982. We also know that the Longines Conquest VHP that effectively replaced this model was launched in 1984, with a related Lithium battery powered movement, so we are happy this model would have been available circa 1982.
CONDITION
Li on the dial refers to a 3v lithium battery which this model originally used to extend the battery life. Happily this watch has been adjusted to take a standard 1.55v battery, making it far easier and cheaper when it comes to changing batteries – the lithium cells are harder to find and cost more, and are also harder to ship. The movement in this watch is the L273.2, a seven jewel quartz movement which is surprising well finished with Côtes de Genève striping and running well. The gold plated bezel does have some wear, but this looks worse in the enlarged photos than it does in real life. The dial is very nice, with applied golden hour markers and black hands to maximise contrast and make the watch easy to read. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The bracelet is quite long and one extra link is included. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and clasp.
