Not a watch you will see many of, this Philip Watch Cormoran model has a good automatic movement and the original boxes.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

Philip Watch Co. was formed in Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, in 1949.  They are best known for the Caribbean dive watches but this Cormoran model wasn’t registered.  Luckily the movement used was only made between 1976 and 1980, so we know this would have been produced within those years.  We picked the mid point.

CONDITION

A Cormoran is a a giant of Cornish folklore, associated with St. Micheal’s Mount – but likely in this case it is an Italian translation for the large black bird the Cormorant.  The clue is the Italian day wheel on the calendar, meaning this watch was probably only intended for the Italian market.  Unusually the calendar day wheel has the ability to have two languages showing, but this shows Italian and Italian!  Both day and date can be quick set via the crown easily.  The movement used is an ETA 2789-1, which has 25 jewels and the oscillating weight is signed for Philip Watch.  The movement is held behind a screw down case back, which does have some tool slip marks.  The case is smaller than some watches, so check the measurements carefully to see if it will suit you.  The fluted bezel is likely gold plated, and like the crown does show some plating lost under the studio lights.  The dial is original but does have some patina.  The wooden box is especially good quality for the period, but it has had a repair at the hinges in the past and a split corner – as pointed out in the video.  The cardboard sleeve for the box is in poor condition, but better to have than not to.  The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.

This watch will be supplied with the original presentation box, outer box and our Certificate of Authenticity.

Please see the HD video for more detail.  All photos and videos are part of the description and are of the actual watch unless mentioned.  We do not photoshop any pictures, and the images are copyright of birthyearwatches.com and should not be used without permission.
