This Longines L994.1 is a wonderful 25 jewel automatic movement built at a time where most people were switching to quartz.  This was a two fingered salute to quartz!

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

We can date this to circa 1978 from the serial number on the watch movement.

CONDITION

When Longines launched the L994.1 movement in 1977, it was the thinnest automatic movement with a date in the World at just 2.95mm high.  Crammed into this tiny space is micrometer adjustment and twin barrels for a long power reserve, and then the movement is decorated with Geneva stripes including the rotor.  This example is on its original bracelet and Longines clasp, and the blue stone set in the crown is not chipped either.  As you can see the gold plate has held up well and the dial is wonderful.  There is some plating loss to the clasp, and the bracelet also has some wear marks but they are minor.  The glass has a small scratch just above the date aperture which is shown in the photographs – it is only noticeable from some angles/lights.  The inside of the caseback has lots of service marks, indicating a well loved and cared for timepiece.

SIZE

32.3mm wide including the crown, just 7.1mm thick. The bracelet will fit up to 210mm wrists.
