With a black dial that may be onyx or a similar stone, this hand winding Rado Esprend is an unusual find.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Rado never registered the word Esprend as a model name, which would have helped. Very little information on this model is available, but we can tell the movement used in this watch was first launched in 1975. If this watch has come out a few years later it is likely it would have been fitted with a quartz movement instead, so we are going with a circa 1975 year of production.
CONDITION
Let’s start with the jet black dial. When viewed from behind, the black colour is still evident and the dial is thicker than a pressed aluminium one would be. This leads us to believe the dial is a type of stone, cut from one block. There is no fading like black paint might do after fifty years either, which further supports the theory of a stone dial. The Rado signed manual wind movement is an ETA 2512-1, and can be wound via the original crown signed with the Rado anchor logo. It is all working well. The original, integrated bracelet is full length and uses a sliding claps, so it should fit most wrists comfortably. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
